Ventanillas of Otuzco (Necropolis)

The preservation of the remains of the ancestors were very generalized in THE ancient Peru. We can say that the difference between each region, each culture or each period, was in the rites and offerings they made.

The people from Cajamarca culture prepared niches carved on the rocks called “ Ventanillas” (Windows) as they look like. We can find this “ventanillas” in the surroundings of Cajamarca Otuzco and Combayo and other areas.

There were an interesting process, first the the dead were first laid on the ground then after sometime the skulls and bones were dug out and put in the niches including their belongings. According the archaeologist this special treatment was only given to important leaders and members of their lineage. They added that some windows were used more than once and even when the Incas conquered the Cajamarca culture and after the Spanish conquest.
